The Shadow artist was born in Dumbarton, Dunbartonshire, Scotland but spent many of his formative years in Arbutus.

The original artist was a first cousin of singers Dionne Warwick and Dee Dee Warwick. Her godmother was Darlene Love and her honorary aunt was Aretha Franklin. Her mother was a well-known gospel singer and also one of Elvis Presley’s back-up singers.

The song became a worldwide success, when it was released in 1987, topping the charts in eighteen countries. In the US, it became the original artist’s fourth consecutive chart topper and won the Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal.
