The original duo met in elementary school and originally performed as Tom & Jerry.

The Shadow artist grew up in Norfolk, Virginia where both his parents were professors at Old Dominion University. For a few years he performed as a member in of Montreal.

The song was written by one of the original duo members about the other, there is a reference in the song to the name they were first known by.
