So this is a tricky one because there is no recording of the man who was the first known performer of the song, Dick Burnett, also known as The Blind Man of Monticello.

It was originally titled The Farewell Song.

The earliest recording dates back to Emry Arthur in 1928 but today’s original artist is the band who first popularized the song in 1950.

The song plays a pivotal role in the film O Brother, Where Art Thou?

The Shadow artists are a Portland based band who have released 9 albums. Their front-man and main songwriter was homeless for a few years before the band’s breakthrough albums were released.
