The 5 O’Clock Shadow: Aug. 15

Today’s cover artist is just as much a legend as the original. She grew up in and around Baltimore, the daughter of a preacher man and was, at age 5, the youngest person ever admitted to The Peabody Conservatory of Music but her interest in rock and roll got her kicked out 6 years later.

The original band achieved unexpected, mainstream success with this song. Billboard once proclaimed “They are that rare band that has everything: critical acclaim, industry respect, pop radio appeal, and a rock-solid college/alternative base”. The album the song was on would eventually sell over seven million copies in the United States, and over 30 million worldwide.
