Today’s songwriters were not the first to record this song (although one of them did eventually). The original recording artist was a country star whose biggest hit was about being poor but seemingly content moving from place to place.
The song was co-written by a gravelly voiced singer/songwriter and a well known record producer.
Our Shadow artist started out turning older blues tunes into high energy rock and roll and became an iconic figure of rock in the 60’s. The Shadow recording went to number one on this day in 1971 and was the Shadow artist’s only number one hit.
