The original artist was a prolific young singer songwriter who came up as part of the Portland music scene. His gentle, honest and melancholic approach to songwriting earned him a cult following, but it wasn’t until he contributed to the Good Will Hunting soundtrack in 1997 that he attracted a more mainstream audience.
This somewhat nihilistic ballad was included on his third studio album, released earlier that year.
