Teens of Denial, Will Toledo’s 2016 breakout album as Car Seat Headrest, was somewhere near the top of most Best Of lists that year, and made him an instant indie rock sensation. But his meteoric rise wasn’t nearly as instant as it seemed. Prior to being signed by Matador Records, Car Seat Headrest had self-produced and released around 8 albums of lo-fi indie rock. One of those albums was Twin Fantasy, which he released independently in 2011 when he was 19. As his official followup to the album that made him a star, he decided to look to the past and redo Twin Fantasy to make it sound the way he always heard it in his head. To Toledo, the album was never really finished in the first place. And while this was a means to finally complete an album he felt strongly about, it was also a way to show newer fans (almost everyone) what they’d been missing out on this whole time.
