The Decemberists are stepping way outside their comfort zone and busting out the synths on a new single called “Severed,” and while the thought of that might put a bad taste in your mouth (it did mine), the new musical direction is a refreshing surprise, and one that could mark the beginning of a whole new electronic era for Portland’s indie-folk icons. The song will be on an upcoming album called I’ll Be Your Girl – produced by John Congleton, known for his studio wizardry and experimental work with St. Vincent, John Grant, Future Islands and many others.
