Dig into this week’s Saturday Alternative playlist! The Fitting Room album was I can feel you creep into my private life by Tune-Yards, out now on 4AD.
Merrill Garbus is an artist bursting at the seams with creativity, which she allows to pour out of her and into her music. Though her sound has evolved from the remarkable drum and vocal loop wizardry of her earlier work, that kind of boundless creative energy remains intact as she adds new sounds and layers into what she does. I can feel you creep into my private life is the fourth Tune-Yards album, and though she’s been playing with bassist Nate Brenner for years, he is now an official member of the band, having co-produced and co-written the entire album with Garbus. This time around, she’s made a conscious decision to make clear the words and messages in her music – songs that touch on race, politics, her own privilege and the cultural appropriation inherent in the music she makes – all the while upping the energy and dance-floor beats and rhythms. It’s an album that will make you move, and think.
