Philly based singer songwriter Jake Ewald released Welcome, his debut album as Slaughter Beach, Dog, in 2016. The whole thing started as an exercise of sorts to help him defeat a bad case of writer’s block he’d been battling while trying to write for his main band, the much beloved Modern Baseball… and it worked. He found that taking a narrative approach lyrically allowed him to get out of his own head and finally put pen to paper. Now, just over a year later, he’s shared Birdie, his sophomore full-length as Slaughter Beach, Dog, and we clearly hear Ewald’s growth as a solo artist, with a more delicate approach to song-craft, added attention to detail and finer production overall. Modern Baseball recently played their final shows before going on hiatus, so the album comes at a perfect time for fans of Ewald’s writing.
