The prolific LA-based artist Ariel Pink has been putting out experimental pop records for nearly two decades. Though he’s never crossed into the mainstream, his influence has far succeeded his fame. Ariel is largely credited with spawning the chillwave movement, and pushing lo-fi forward. The guys in Animal Collective were some of the first to take notice back in 2003 when they put his music out on their Paw Tracks record label. Many years and several LP’s later, Ariel has returned with a concept album – Dedicated to Bobby Jameson – his 11th studio album. It’s based on the life of LA musician Bobby Jameson, who was once thought to be dead until he returned, 35 years later, with a new autobiography telling his story. A story that inspired Ariel Pink enough to write a full album about him – one that takes us on an strange and psychedelic journey.
