Dig into this week’s Saturday Alternative playlist! The Fitting Room album was Antisocialites by Alvvays, out now on Polyvinyl.

Toronto’s Alvvays won us over a few years ago with their self titled debut album, seeped in late 90’s indie pop nostalgia, dreamy guitars and textures and themes of young romance, like on the song “Archie, Marry Me.” That song alone made them instant indie sensations, Ben Gibbard of Death Cab calling it his favorite song of the year, and covering it live. For their new album, aptly titled Antisocialites, frontwoman Molly Rankin secluded herself in an abandoned classroom on Toronto Island to write lyrics and melodies and to record demos, sometimes heading off on her own to sit at the beach and listen to her favorite records for inspiration. The band then worked on the album together, guitarist Alec O’Hanley co-producing alongside indie producer extraordinaire John Congleton. The resulting album is one that is more diverse in sound and pace, more polished, yet with more grit and attitude at the same time. And still, there are plenty of the whimsical qualities and catchy melodies we fell in love with the first time.
