Today’s Adult Kid is Paul Simon. Like other popular artists who have been around awhile Paul has made a few stops at Sesame Street, and today we’ll hear an improvised version of Paul singing “Me and Julio Down By the Schoolyard” with one of the Sesame Street kids. Paul has been performing since 1964, first as part of the duo Simon and Garfunkel, and wrote their #1 hits “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” “Mrs. Robinson,” and “Sound Of Silence.” In 1970, he started his solo career, and we’ll hear something from his Graceland album, which sold over 14 million copies and became a controversial situation for Paul, irking the anti-apartheid movement, and calling into question artistic obligation, and the relationship between music and politics.
We’ll also be checking in with Brian Simms and Tom Moon of the Milkshake Band for our new weekly feature Talking Tunes With Brian and Tom, and we’ll hear our once-monthly feature smARTbeats where we spotlight a teaching artist working in Maryland schools. Today we’ll chat with pianist and teaching artist Scott Patterson.
