Leonard Cohen will release his 14th LP, You Want It Darker. on October 21st, and today, on his 82nd birthday, he’s shared the album’s brooding title track. Described in a press release as “an unflinching exploration of the religious mind,” the song finds the legendary lyricist sounding more gravelly-voiced than ever as he taps a hopeless feeling deep within us all. The album was produced by his son, Adam Cohen, and together they enlisted Montreal’s Cantor Gideon Zelermyer and the Shaar Hashomayim Synagogue Choir to provide a beautifully ominous backdrop to the songs “hypnotic groove.” Have a listen below, and find a brief description of each of You Want It Darker‘s nine songs on Leonard Cohen’s website.
