If you were watching the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon back in early August, you might have caught Nathaniel Rateliff and his band The Night Sweats making their television debut and pouring it all out on stage during a performance of a song called “S.O.B.” That performance got a lot of people talking (including Fallon himself), and it’s that same kind of passion, rawness and soulfulness that we find on their self-titled debut. We’re more than thrilled to make Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats our CD of the Month for September. Check out the music video for “S.O.B.”
Born in Missouri and based in Denver, Rateliff has been releasing well crafted, heartfelt and introspective Americana on his own for years. Now that he’s backed by a full six-piece band (horn section included) his music has risen to a whole new level. The songs are still great, but there’s this new gritty attitude and a sound ranging from sweaty, floor stomping folk and roots to swaggering old-school soul and r&b. It’s no wonder Stax Records came on board to release their debut album. Below, watch a live performance of album opener “I Need Never Get Old,” and be sure to tune in as we’ll be digging deep into this album all month long.
