Sarah Versprille and Daniel Hindman have been making music together for several years. They played with Andy Cabic in the band Vetiver for a while where they began to connect musically before going on to play shows as Pure Bathing Culture. They got a lot of attention back in 2013 with the release of their debut album Moon Tides, a beautiful, chilled-out dream-pop record. Leading the way was the song “Pendulum.”
The Portland duo describe the music on Moon Tides as what came naturally to them when they wrote together. But on their new album, Pray For Rain, they knew they wanted to step out of the box and approach writing and recording differently than they had in the past. They chose the right guy for job, enlisting the acclaimed producer and engineer John Congleton (St. Vincent, Modest Mouse, The Walkmen, Sarah Jaffe) to help take their music in a new direction. They recently released the album’s title track and right off the bat we hear a change in sound, with the up-beat drum samples and wall of swirling synths and guitars that comes tumbling in. Versprille is also sounding more confident than ever on “Pray For Rain.” Listen below, and keep your ear out for new music from Pure Bathing Culture on WTMD.
Pray For Rain comes out 10/23 on Partisan.
