Minneapolis quintet Gospel Machine describe themselves as a “garage gospel” band. Their music brings to mind some of the greats, like Otis Redding and Sharon Jones, and it’s that garage-grit and attitude, along with frontwoman Jayanthi Kyle’s stunning vocals, that make their sound so authentic. We’ve taken notice here at WTMD, and we think you should too. If you’ve been tuned in you may have already heard their song “That Ring.”

Gospel Machine formed back in 2011 when guitarist Wes Burdine asked Jayanthi and the musicians in his other band, The Small Cities, to join him on some music he had written for a church. The performance went so well, and they had so much fun doing it, that they decided not to stop there.  It’s seems likely that at some point someone exclaimed, “We are a gospel machine!” and all else was history. We’ll have to ask them ourselves next chance we get. In the meantime, check out this beautiful performance of “Why Don’t My Mockingbird Sing?” They’ve also shared a few more songs from their upcoming debut album Your Holy Ghost, which you can find below the video.

Your Holy Ghost drops Oct. 2nd.
