“Wish I Was Here” is the title to Zach Braff’s new movie, and his favorite song on the soundtrack that already includes Braff stalwarts The Shins as well as Bon Iver. It was originally to assigned to Coldplay, but when Chris Martin wrote the lyrics and thought of the strong woman played by Kate Hudson, who becomes the matriarch of a family, he envisioned a female singing lead.

Enter Chan Marshall, a.k.a. Cat Power, after Martin and Braff both agreed that Marshall’s smokey voice would suit the track well. So Cat Power went to Electric Ladyland Studios in NYC to lay down vocals. Then Martin would add harmonies with the band producing the song. The soundtrack is out next Tuesday.
